This fall, we invited you to join us for Sondheim’s A Little Night Music with the Blue Hill Troupe. Now, we would like to extend a second invitation to Iolanthe; or The Peer and the Peri is a comedic opera, with music composed by Arthur Sullivan and libretto written by W.S. Gilbert. Circulating around the shenanigans of fairies and the House of Peers, the opera serves as a poignant satire of British government that is both thought provoking and humerous.

Twenty five years before our story begins, a fairy named Iolanthe commits the capitol crime of falling in love with and marrying a mortal. However, because Iolanthe is so loved by the other fairies, the Fairy Queen reduces her sentence to exile as long as Iolanthe swears to leave her husband and never contact her husband again. Iolanthe goes on to raise her half mortal, half fairy son Strephon alone.

The curtain rises as the Fairy Queen pardons Iolanthe. Strephon then announces that he has fallen in love with Phyllis, a ward of the Court of Chancery, and intends to marry her. However, at the very moment this is happening, the House of Lords asks the Lord Chancellor for Phyllis’ hand in marriage to one of their members. What happens next is a series of misunderstandings that reveal the intertwined relationship between the British Parliament and the Fairy Court. CCBF invites you to see this tale of love and politics for yourself this Spring, in the second partnership performance by the talented Blue Hill Troupe.
