Our History

In 1944, Carl H. Smith, a physician and researcher, started the Children’s Blood Transfusion Clinic at New York Hospital.  This clinic, the first of its kind in the United States, treated children with thalassemia, a life threatening blood disease.  In 1952, Dr. Smith partnered with Harold Weill to found the Children’s Blood Foundation, an organization supporting research in the underfunded area of children’s blood disorders.

The Children’s Blood Foundation’s home at New York Hospital merged with Presbyterian Hospital in 1997 to become NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center.  In 2006, the Children’s Blood Foundation changed its name to the Children’s Cancer & Blood Foundation to reflect its commitment to treating the entire patient population of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.  Through its support of the Division, CCBF has created a standard of excellence in the treatment of children with chronic, life-threatening cancer and blood diseases.
